Poor farming practices in the 1800s led to the creation of gullies as deep as 150 feet in what is now Providence Canyon State Park, also called Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon.” The canyon’s colorful soil includes gradients of pink, orange, red, and purple and gives the impression of a natural painting. Visitors are encouraged to stay on marked trails and behind fences, as canyon edges may collapse.

The Plumleaf Azalea, an exclusively local variety, blooms during July and August. This naturally occurring azalea can be spotted in Providence Canyon State Park, while cultivated plants are preserved at the nearby Callaway Gardens.

Hikers can explore the rim trail for views from above or hike down into the canyons to see evidence of the water table beneath the soil. Families can reserve picnic shelters, and children can enjoy the playground. The on‑site museum details the history of the region and the 2,706‑acre park.

Located about an hour south of Columbus, Providence Canyon State Park makes a great day trip for outdoor enthusiasts, families, and furry friends on leashes.
