Jimmy Carter National Historic Park

Plains, Georgia, the hometown of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, welcomes visitors to explore the history and legacy of the President, First Lady, and the city itself. Beginning at the Plains High School Visitor Center and Museum, visitors can tour Jimmy Carter’s boyhood farm, which dates back to 1928 and remains in operation today. Guests may also take a walking or driving tour through Plains to see sites that shaped the Carter family and continue to influence the community, including the Plains Depot, churches, homes, businesses, and historic campaign artifacts.

Located about an hour southwest of Columbus, Georgia, the city of Plains preserves the legacy of President Carter and invites visitors to visit, learn, and reflect.

To experience Plains in a unique way, visitors can take themed train ride on the Historic SAM Shortline Excursion Train. Departing from the Georgia Veterans State Park, routes include the Presidential Flyer, the Peanut Express, the Plains Express, the Plains Christmas Lighting, and more.
