Here’s a great idea for some outdoor fun with a new event they are kicking off at Ft. Benning (Wetherby Field) called “Movies Under the Stars.” Every Friday in April they’ll be showing a family-friendly movie and get this…they’ll even supply you with free popcorn! This Friday, the movie is “Tangled.” Disney put a new twist on this classic story, but you’ll still find Rapunzel, a spirited teen with an unlikely superpower—70 feet of magical golden hair (at $260 million, Tangled is the most expensive animated film ever made—according to Wikipedia, that is!). Feel free to bring coolers, a lawn chair, and even your pets. No admission and the movie starts at 8:30pm (706.545.3328)
If you think you’ve seen it all…well, unless you’ve been to an other-worldly place called Pasaquan…you haven’t seen it all just yet! Pasaquan is a world-renowned visionary art site located near Buena Vista. It consists of a series of vividly painted concrete walls and buildings that portray the artist' vision of the future. But that’s only the generic definition! Pasaquan was the home of legendary folk artist Eddie Owens Martin, who called himself St. EOM, and this place almost defies description! You won’t believe what a very vivid imagination and gallons and gallons of Sherwin Williams paint resulted in. He saw it as a way to express the connection he saw between the earthly environment and the spiritual creator. All this from a guy who wore colorful flowing robes with jingling bells and dangling shells and usually a feathered and beaded headdress! Something special for college students this Saturday (April 2) ...bring your ID and you get in free! Admission for adults is $5 and the site will be open from 10:00am-4:00pm.
If you’re in the mood to watch some tennis action this weekend, check out the Bullfrog/USTA Southern Section tournament at the Cooper Creek Tennis Center that will feature 16 & 18 year-old tennis phenoms (guys & girls) from all over the United States! (229.649.9444)
Here’s another good reason to get out and breathe in little fresh air…it’s time for the annual “Festival by the Lake Craft Day” at Florence Marina State Park. Talk about a day full of cool stuff…they’ll have lots of craftsmen on hand doing all sorts of things like blacksmithing, there’s a flint-napper, knife-making, wood carvers, rug makers, storytellers, quilts, woodwork, candle-dipping, and bee keeping. A good many of these crafts will be on sale, too! Kids are going to love it because there’s going to be a fishing booth, face painting, a ride-the-bull game and lots more. There will also be live entertainment and a variety of good food or pack your picnic basket! It's all happening Saturday (April 2) from 10:00am-4:00pm and the only admission is a $5 parking pass. How about something just for kids this weekend? The Columbus Public Library has a program on Saturday (April 2) at 1:00pm called “Growing Good Readers” and here’s what they have planned. Belinda Johnson, who happens to be a Master Gardner, will read the book, Planting a Rainbow, then talk to the kids about how to plant flowers and other plants. Then the children will be provided with flowers to plant in containers to be placed in the library’s garden! So they’ll get to hear a great story and then get all dirty planting flowers…sounds like a good day to be a kid! Best suited for kids between the ages of 5 and 11. (706.243.2679)
