A Weekend in Columbus, GA is Just What We Need!

It's a good thing we're staring headlong into the weekend because we're going to need all this time to take in lots of the fun stuff going on!  We're never at a loss for things to do in Columbus, GA so here's a quick rundown of a few of the things scheduled, but remember you can always take a look at the Community Calendar and there you can find tons (and I do mean tons!) of ideas of things to get out and do.

If you can’t decide between a nice dinner and a night at the theatre or you’re looking for a great date night idea…well, here you go! How about checking out the new installment of Sherlock’s Mystery Dinner Theatre with their production of “A Red Carpet Murder” at the Marriott Hotel! Seems a young comedic actor is getting the lifetime achievement award, but he’s SO young that many of the celebrities in the audience are angry that he’s receiving it that they would kill to take his place! It’ll be a miracle if he makes it out of the first act alive! So whodunit? Could be you! That’s the fun part…not only do you get to have a great 3-course meal, but you just might be a part of the show! How much do folks love this? Since 2008, they’ve entertained more than 6,000 people!  Cost is $48.50 and that includes the meal AND the show…that's a great deal!  Show starts at 7:00pm (don't be late!) and will be held each Friday and Saturday through November 12.

The Harris County Cattleman’s Association is talking bull…no really! They’re getting geared up for the 24th Annual Professional Rodeo in Hamilton, GA, which will be held this Friday and Saturday (Sept 17 & 18) at the Mike Tracy Arena at the Agri-Center in Hamilton, GA . If you’ve never had the chance to experience a real rodeo before…well, here you go! Each night, you can check out the pros doing steer wrestling, bareback riding, team roping, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing and the one everyone really gets excited about…the bull riding competition! There’s even a midway that kids will love and plenty of southern eats. Gates open at 6:00pm and the rodeo starts at 8:00pm.

The Uptown Concert Series continues Friday night from 7:00-10:00pm with none other than Peggy Jenkins and The Bizness! Bring your lawn chair and scope out a good spot in the 1000 block of Broadway in Uptown and get ready for a night of great music and family fun!

It’s being touted as the “Biggest Shrine Circus to Ever Come to Columbus” and it’s happening this Saturday and Sunday with 5 huge shows at the Columbus Civic Center! I don’t care how old you are or whether you have kids or not…everybody loves a circus! They’ll have all the components you love…clowns, tigers, lions, acrobats flying overhead on the trapeze, and of course lots of good circus kinds of food…cotton candy, peanuts, candied apples…all the major food groups! So if you have kids, take them and make some good memories…and if you don’t have kids…go anyway and feel like a kid again!  You can get tickets in advance and save a few bucks or you can get them at the door the day of the show.

Maybe it was my imagination or maybe it was just wishful thinking, but I think I saw some leaves on the ground and blowing in the wind! Could it be that Fall is almost here? I know I’m ready for the change of seasons and it looks like the folks at Hills & Dales are as well. They’ve got a really cool workshop you can attend this Saturday called Leaf Casting ($25). The staff will lead this hands-on class and you can choose to work with a big leaf magnolia, hosta, oakleaf hydrangea, or an elephant ear. You get to create a wonderful casting of a large leaf that can be used as a decorative feature in your home or garden. Space is limited so the class is limited to 25 participants. While you’re there, make sure you take time to wander through the gardens or even take a tour through the big family home. It’s the home of the Callaway family and it’s now open to the public for tours…it is amazing!

Need some good music this weekend? Look no further than the performance with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra titled “Brahms and Prokofiev.” They are even going to have a special guest performer on the piano knocking out some classic pieces! Show starts at 7:30pm this Saturday night at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts.

Yep…all of this is going on in and around Columbus, GA and believe me when I tell you, this is just the tip of the iceberg!  There's something going on for everyone.

Now, go have some fun…
