Field Trips to the Moon & Beyond

Day One

Time

Event

10:00 a.m.

Arrive at the Coca-Cola Space Science Center. Your flight directors will prepare you for your space odyssey. Test your talent to be an astronaut as you master the controls of the Shuttle or take the helm of the controls in the launch pad. Remember, not all space flights are problem-free!

12:00 p.m.

Picnic lunch on the RiverWalk (catered by a local catering company).

1:00 p.m.

Depart for Columbus Museum.

1:15 - 2:15 p.m.

Tour the second largest art museum in the Southeast that is educational, historical, and houses fine arts. Stroll through the recently enhanced History Gallery. View the awarding winning film, The Chattahoochee Legacy. Don't forget to check out the Transformations Discovery Gallery.

2:30 p.m.

Arrive at Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center (a part of Columbus State University) discover the environment and inhabitants of the marsh that surrounds this center. You may even get involved in an experiment or two! Allow at least 1 1/2 hours.

4:30 p.m.

This afternoon you’ll be given a bit of free time to frolic along the RiverWalk... inline skating, walking, running or just strolling.

5:00 p.m.

It’s back to the hotel to "regroup" before dinner.

6:00 p.m.

Dinner at Country’s Barbecue North (Main Street Village). You’ll not only be served the best barbecue in the Southeast, management encourages you to "doodle" or release your artistic energies by drawing on the butcher-paper covered table.

7:00 p.m.

It’s still a bit early, so let’s go out for fun at the Hollywood Connection in North Columbus.

8:00 p.m.

Return to the hotel.

Day Two

8:30 a.m.

After an early morning breakfast at the hotel, depart for the National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus.

8:45 a.m.

Arrive at the National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus to see  remains of ironclad gunboats, the largest collection of Civil War naval-related flags in the country, stories of powder monkeys and much more.

10:15 a.m.

Depart Port Columbus for Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari.

11:00 a.m.

Arrive at Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari. LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS! OH MY! After obtaining your food pellets, board the bus for your "Safari" through the domain of over 500 species of animals. Careful, now! Clyde the Camel loves to meet new friends, the giraffe "towers" over its visitors, and the goats really enjoy your handouts.

12:30 p.m.

Picnic lunch at Butts Mill Farm arranged by Butts Mill staff.

1:30 p.m.

Tour Callaway Gardens with stops at Sibley Horticultural Center, Day Butterfly Center, and Mr. Cason’s Vegetable Garden. Allow two hours.

3:30 p.m.

Depart for home.

(Optional Activities)

Visit Rood Creek Indian Mounds at Florence Marina State Park. (Approx. 45-50 minutes South of Columbus) Allow at least 1 1/2 hours.

Visit Fort Mitchell Military Cemetery and Native-American sculpture. (Allow 45 minutes)

Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Little White House in Warm Springs. (30 minutes North of Columbus) Allow 1 hour.
