This is a very special year for Port Columbus…2011 marks 10 years since the opening of the museum and 50 years since the raising of the CSS Jackson and it’s the first year of the Civil War Sesquicentennial. On Friday (March 11) at 11:00 am, there will be a ceremony onboard the USS WaterWitch celebrating the museum’s 10th anniversary and will include VIP guests, music, living history and a cannon salute. On Saturday & Sunday, RiverBlast will include more living history, a musical theatre piece about the efforts to build a Southern Navy, interpretive tours of the museum and the Water Witch, 1860’s music and the cannon will be fired 6 times on Saturday. Food and wine…2 of my absolute favorite things are part of a program that benefits great music, one of my other favorite things. The Columbus Symphony is holding their annual fundraiser, A Toast of the Town: A Symphony of Food and Wine, Friday (March 11) at RiverMill Event Centre. You can savor samplings of food from the area’s finest chefs and restaurants and experience wines from vintners from around the world. There’s a Silent Auction that features a variety of fine wines, trips and treasures. The MarketPlace is yet another element of this magical evening and here you can purchase your favorite food and wine specialty items. All the proceeds benefit the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. The new Chattahoochee Valley Camellia Society is holding it’s first Camellia Show this weekend, Saturday and Sunday (March 12 & 13) from 1:00-5:00 pm at the Columbus Museum. The show is FREE and is open to the public. Call 706.322.6903 for more information.
If you have little kids and are looking for something different to do with them this weekend, look no further than RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Friday night (March 11), they have a performance of Click Clack Moo, a musical version of Betsy Lewin’s Caldecott Award-winning book. This is a hilariously “moo-ving” story of compromise and negotiation that finds Farmer Brown bothered by the “click clack moo; clickety, clackety, moo” of the cows typing in protest of their working conditions. This is a great way to introduce kids to theatre, even as they learn a valuable lesson about life. And who doesn’t love cows? Show starts at 7:00pm and tickets range from $8-$14. (706.256.3612)
This Sunday (March 13), the Columbus Jazz Society presents their monthly jazz jam and concert at the Liberty Theatre (813 8th Ave) with special guest, The Mara Rosenbloom Quartet. According the New York critics, This quartet “plays music that renders believable a future for jazz.” Their original compositions combine lyrical melodies and rhythmic themes and are said to revitalize the spirit of jazz with honesty and soul. All members of the Mara Rosenbloom quartet are extremely talented and have very impressive resumes. They have toured all over the United States and internationally and have won acclamations and awards. This is a great and affordable evening, especially if you’re looking for a fun and different date night. Check out the jams between 6:00-9:00pm and admission is $10. (706.649.7291)
The Columbus Cottonmouths take on the Mississippi Surge this weekend on Friday and Saturday. Both games are at 7:30pm at the Civic Center. Tickets range from $12 - $22. (706.653.4472)
