You don't even need to look at a calendar…just step outside and see the blue sky, green leaves, purple wysteria and everything else covered in yellow…and you know it's Spring in the South! It's shaping up to be a weekend full of fun things to do out in the gorgeous weather, so here's a short list to get you started on your weekend plans. It’s the classic story of a boy and his fleejer. Well maybe not so classic but definitely a heart-warming and feel-good story. It's "The Little Baby Snoogle-Fleefer" at the Springer Opera House. Jeremy, a thoughtful young boy taunted by his peers, is abandoned at the seashore one day when his so-called friends flee at the sight of a terrifying ogre. As Jeremy confronts the creature, he realizes he’s not a terrifying monster at all but just a baby snoogle-fleejer looking for a playmate. The two become fast friends, go on grand adventures and even end up saving the village. The play is actually based on a children’s book by former President Jimmy Carter, and his daughter, Amy, illustrated the book. It’s a great story brought to life on the Springer stage. If you can't squeeze it in this weekend, it's also being performed April 1 & 2…Friday and Saturday at 7:00pm and also a matinee on Saturday at 2:00pm. Tickets range from $7-$10. (706.327.3688)
Dog Lovers listen up! It’s time for the 3rd Annual Relay for Dogs, which is the American Cancer Society’s Bark for Life: A Canine Event to Fight Cancer. This is such a fantastic way to spend a Saturday morning if you have dogs or are just a dog person. There are all sorts of activities including an opening ceremony where dogs that are cancer survivors will be recognized, 2 agility-dog demonstrations, a pet training seminar, and a pet disaster preparedness seminar by a local vet. At 11 am PAWS Humane will hold pet contests where 4 will win prizes in the categories of Best Dressed, Owner Look-alike, Tiniest Dog, and Heavyweight. Plus, there will be all kinds of pet related vendors on hand with lots of free giveaways, including the presenting sponsor, Pet Supermarket. Written proof of rabies vaccinations is required for admittance! It all takes place at the Walden Women’s Soccer Facility on CSU's Main Campus from 9:00am-1:00pm. Running and walking are good for you so why not get fit and support homeless veterans and veterans in need during the "Red, White and Blue Veterans Run; 10K, 5K, and 1 Mile Healthy Walk” at Rotary Park. The run is March 26 at 7 AM. Call 706.593.3393 for more information and registration fees.
You know, people in the South love nothing more than to go look at old historic homes, but when we actually get to go inside these houses that are normally closed to the public it’s like Christmas has come early! So Christmas must be coming this Sunday because the Fort Benning Annual Historic Tour of Homes has been opened to the public. Ten houses including the home of Fort Benning’s Commanding General and family will be on the tour this year. They are inviting everyone out to enjoy this time-honored tradition, but you do have to be at least 16 years of age. So if you have a passion for history and architecture or are just a little voyeuristic like me and love to see inside other peoples’ homes, this tour is for you. (I promise, I only look to see paint colors and decorations!) It kicks off Sunday at 1:00pm at Riverside (100 Vibbert Avenue) and tickets are $10. (706.763.8856)
Need a little music this weekend? Head to the RiverCenter this Sunday at 7:30pm for a special performance by The Del McCoury Band with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The Washington Post calls Del McCoury a “national treasure” and The New York Times says The Preservation Hall Jazz Band has “drive, funk, and believe it or not, youth” and The Del McCoury Band has been nominated and won Grammy awards over the years and was actually nominated this year for best Bluegrass album. So if these two groups are so good on their own, imagine what a musical force they’ll be combined. Not only are they performing together but will be releasing a joint album on April 12th called American Legacies. I’m sure many people wonder how two such different genres can come together like this but they actually have a myriad of common influences and musical vocabularies. It should be a great show! Just up the road a bit (north on Hwy 27 to be more precise!) Poplar Place Farms will be the host for the March Horse Trials, Mar 25-27. This is one of the premier horse trials for the U.S Eventing Association. 400 horses are entered for competition! Call 706.332.5131 for more information.
