Don’t miss the last weekend of Cotton Patch Gospel at the Springer Opera House! This fun musical that tells the “Gospel of Matthew” but the gospel is set in modern day times in rural Georgia. Jesus is born the son of a carpenter in Gainesville, meets a country preacher named John the Baptizer on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and delivers the Sermon on the Mount at Stone Mountain Park. Featuring Ron Anderson as Matthew and the Justice Bluegrass Band, and with music by the late, great Harry Chapin, you will definitely be entertained. This show delivers a feeling of childlike belief, wonder and reverence. A great way to spend some time with the family on Easter weekend!
Well, the Easter Bunny is definitely earning his paycheck this weekend. He’ll be very busy as all the Easter activities and egg hunts get underway. On Saturday, March 30, Florence Marina will host their Annual Easter Egg Hunt from 1-3pm. They’ll have both candy eggs and prize eggs for three age groups ranging from 1 – 10 years old. Bring the kids and their baskets and enjoy the day! If you’re headed north, Callaway Gardens also has an Egg Hunt on Saturday from 2pm-4pm at Robin Lake Beach. The Easter Bunny will be there to pose for pictures. And on Sunday, in Uptown Columbus in Woodruff Park, it’s a HUGE Easter Celebration! Starting at 12:30pm, there will be a helicopter egg drop delivering over 15,000 Easter Eggs. With a special visit from the Easter Bunny, music and games for the whole family and food vendors on site, it’s a great way to spend the day!
Beautiful music is good for the soul. And there will be an abundance of it this Saturday night at RiverCenter as the Columbus Symphony Orchestra presents This Precious Stone, This England. This concert features renowned violinist Jennifer Frautschi. The audience will enjoy Elgar’s Violin Concerto in B Minor and Vaughan Williams Symphony No. 2, “A London Symphony.” These two works are both by English composers and both were written in the early part of the 20th century. Vaughan Williams’ symphony brings to mind London in the early 19000’s including references to Big Ben and a chilly town square on a November afternoon. The Southern Literary Festival is an organization of colleges and schools founded to promote southern literature. Every year a different school hosts the event, which is an undergraduate writing conference with workshops and a writing. But if you’re not a student, don’t worry! There are some public readings and events you can attend. Tonight (3.29), there will be a public reading by acclaimed American novelist, Tim O’Brien, of his novel, “The Things They Carried” at the Springer Opera House at 7:30pm. On Saturday, March 30, Pulitzer Prize winning poet Natasha Tretheway, also the current poet laureate of the U.S. and award-winning poet, Dan Albergotti, will conduct a poetry discussion panel and reading at the CSU Riverside Theatre Complex. These public events are FREE!
On Saturday, March 30, from 10am to noon, join Oxbow Meadows for their latest animal and art program, Colorful Creations! This time there will be a 30-minute program about butterflies followed by an hour-long art class. It’s open to kids age 6 and up and the cost is $15 per child.
