Ever since I was a kid, Fall has always been my favorite time of year. The colors of the leaves and the sky, cooler temperatures, the smell of wood burning in a fireplace, Halloween and Thanksgiving. But the one thing that really made me watch the clock in the classroom, just waiting for the afternoon bell to sound, was knowing that this would be the night when we'd pile the family up in the green Chevy station wagon and head to the Greater Columbus Fair! Just walking up to the entrance and knowing that as soon as I got that ticket in my hand and pushed my way through the turnstile, I was on a mission to feast on the sights, sounds, rides, games, and of course, the tastes of the Fair. There had to be a ride on the ferris wheel (not the Spider---tried that one year and regretted it for several hours when the ride finally came to an end), french fries with a sprinkling of vinegar, a run through the glass house, a foot-long hot dog, a lot of people-watching...all topped off with a caramel apple with nuts! That's been many, many years ago but those fun memories still come alive this time of year. It looks like the weather is taking a turn for the better, so you have until this Sunday, October 19 to get your friends and family together, head to the Columbus Civic Center and go make some memories of your own. I'll be the one on the merry-go-round with a bag full of cotton candy!
