Applause, Jaws and Wiffle Balls in Columbus, GA!

Wow…what a weekend we've got coming up in Columbus, GA!  In fact, this is one of those weekends people wait for all year long because of all the fun stuff going on!  What's on the menu this weekend?  Let's take a look at a short list of events, then I'd suggest you take a look at the Community Calendar to get more details on these and a complete listing of other happenings.

We’re kicking it off on Friday night at 7:00pm (8.26.11) with the popular Beep Ball game at South Commons. If you’ve never been to a beep ball game or maybe have never even heard of it, it's softball for the visually impaired. The ball and the bases actually beep! The Chicago Comets, the World Championship beep ball team, are coming back again to play the sponsors of Country’s Midnight Run. But the twist is that the sponsors play blindfolded. So not only is this game hilarious to watch, because as far as I know the sponsor team has never won, but it also raises awareness and supports the visually impaired. Admission is free but donations will be accepted!

The festivities continue on Saturday (8.27.11) with Country’s Midnight Express. Even if you’re not a runner this is a great event. They block off streets and Country’s parking lot (Midtown location) and it’s basically a big party. The live bands will crank up at 7:00pm, CSU cheerleaders will be there putting on demonstrations, and Gold’s Gym always shows up with lots of cool stuff. Many of vendors will be on hand as well. And if you haven’t seen all the kids playing under the hose spray from the ladder truck of the Columbus Fire Department, it is truly a sight! If you want to run, the registration fee is $25 and you can register in advance on the website or on site before 11:30pm. Don’t forget, all of this is to raise awareness and benefit the visually impaired!

If you haven't had a chance to check out the new facilities at Oxbow Meadows, here's a great reason to put it on your To-Do list this weekend.  They've got a free event planned called "A Walk Through thr Calendar Year with Linda Frasier” She's a botanical artist that specializes in native plants of the Southeast. Her work can be seen in an exhibit on Saturday, August 27 from 11:00am to 3:00pm and the artist will be there to reveal the stories behind her paintings. I got a sneak peek at her work and it is amazing!  She even hides images of insects in each piece…pretty cool.

What great timing! Next week is Labor Day weekend, so lots of folks will be going to the beach and swimming in the ocean. I can’t think of a better time to go see JAWS! Especially on the big screen! Well you have the chanceFriday night at the Springer Opera House. As part of their Classic Film Series, Jaws will be shown on a huge screen set-up on their main stage. Wow! The show will starts at 7:30 PM, but the saloon opens at 6:30 PM or refreshments and snacks. Tickets are only $10, making it a great date night. I do recommend leaving the kiddos at home if you ever want them to go swimming again. I remember the first time I saw JAWS and I wouldn’t even get in a pool for a long time afterwards.

While we’re on the subject of theatres, let’s talk about RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. This Saturday is their much-anticipated Single Ticket Saturday, which means you can go and buy single tickets to any of the shows in their upcoming season even if you aren’t a season ticket holder. This is a huge deal because the single tickets are only available this Saturday until six weeks prior to the show. The RiverCenter’s Broadway on Broadway Events are so popular and so spectacular that you really need to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity. The tickets go on sale at 10:00am but the lobby doors open at 9:00am and I recommend getting there early because the line WILL start even earlier!

Now here's something way out of the ordinary and it's perfect for those of us who are adults, but would love to be a kid again…if just for a little while!  Head to Edgewood Park Baseball Field this Saturday for the Wiffle Ball Classic!  This Adult Wiffle Ball tournament is open to adults 18 and up. Teams will consist of 5 players and play according to Big League Wiffle Ball Rules. Games start at 9 :00am. Call 706.393.8181 for more information.  This should be a hoot!

All set for the weekend?  I thought so!

Now, go have some fun…
