Mouse with purple purse and purpose invades Springer Children’s Theatre

Columbus, GA-10.5.2015:  The Springer has mice. And will have mice from Oct. 7 until Oct. 18.

The State Theatre of Georgia is happy to have these mice, though, because they’re the wonderful mice who inhabit the world of “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse.”

“Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” is the next production of the Springer Children’s Theatre.

Lilly is a mouse who knows what she likes. She likes her pointy pencils, her glittery movie-star glasses and her three shiny quarters. But most of all, Lilly likes her brand new purple plastic purse.

Along with her friends Chester, Wilson and her beloved teacher, Mr. Slinger, Lilly finds endless adventures fueled by her delightfully oversized imagination.

“Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” is fun story with important messages about manners, conduct, sharing and taking turns.

Although Lilly makes mistakes, she — and the audience — learn from them.

“Lilly is one of the great female characters in literature — like Anna Karennina with whiskers or Scarlett O’Hara with paws,” said USA Today.

“Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” is one of the most beloved of Kevin Henkes many books for children. Henkes started writing children’s books when he was 19. Since he has written and illustrated more than 45 children’s books. Among his many awards are two Newberry and two Caldecott honors.

“It should be said: Kevin Henkes is a genius,” said the New York Times Book Review.

“Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” was adapted for the stage by Kevin Kling, who adapted it from three popular Henkes books: “Chester’s Way,” “Julius, the Baby of the World” and “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse.”

“Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” opens with performances for school and home-schooled groups 9:30 a.m. & 11:30 a.m., Wednesdays-Fridays, Oct. 7-9 and Oct. 14-16. To schedule a group for one of these performances call 706-324-1100.

Public performances of “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” run at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 9-10 and Oct. 17-18, and at 2 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 11 and Oct. 18. To get tickets or more information about a public performance, call 706-327-3688 or visit springeroperahouse.org.

All performances are in the McClure Theatre, the Springer’s second theatre. The entrance is on 1st Avenue, right behind the Springer’s Mainstage Theatre.
