Columbus, GA--10.29.2014: “Della's Diner” premiered in Atlanta in 1978 and played for years. Tom Edwards’ story developed a cult following and spawned a slew of hit sequels.
Now the musical comedy is being revived by the Springer as its first production in the 2014-15 Studio II Series. After “Della’s Diner” runs Nov. 13-22 at the McClure Theatre, the Springer’s second theatre on 1st Avenue just behind the State Theatre of Georgia (which is affectionately known as The Dot), it will tour as the Springer’s offering for its 2015 national tour this winter and spring.
Edwards has written six musicals including “Scarlett Fever” (his musical comedy version of “Gone with the Wind”), “Mistress of Meadowbrook” and “Della’s Diner II.” He has written for “Search for Tomorrow,” Guiding Light,” “Growing Pains and “Divorce Court.”
“Della’s Diner” is a heartwarming story of a woman with a past who moves to a Tennessee mountain top, opens a diner and marries the man of her dreams … only to discover that her mountain is a nuclear waste dump and her husband is missing after a suspicious helicopter crash at the neighboring filling station. The show is full of foot-stomping, country-western-gospel original music.
Director Paul Pierce serves up a smorgasboard of greasy spoon metaphors to describe “Della’s Diner”: “It will have you scattered, smothered and covered in laughter.” And, “You’ll just eat up this delicious original country, blues, gospel and rocakabilly tunes.”
He said that it is the only country-and-western, musical-comedy soap opera he can think of. “It’s hilarious and wacky, but it’s also very touching.”
The show will answer such burning questions as: Will Della bust her grandson out of reform school? Can Connie Sue Day regain her crown as America’s Country Music Queen? Will Ronnie Frank Flaugher realize his dream of a double-wide trailer? And why is the chili pot radioactive?
“Della’s Diner” has performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, Nov. 13-15 and Nov. 20-22, and a Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16.
