Vince Dooley

Profile of a sports legend

For 25 years as head football coach at the University of Georgia and later serving as the school’s athletic director, Vince Dooley firmly planted himself as one of the state’s most beloved sports icons.

Dooley was twice named NCAA National Coach of the Year (1980 and 1982), while taking home honors as SEC Coach of the Year seven times in his heralded career.

An Alabama native who made Georgia his home in 1964, Dooley coached the Georgia Bulldogs to 201 victories. During his span as head football coach, he led the team to a national championship in 1980 in addition to six Southeastern Conference championships. After retiring from coaching in 1988, he remained at Georgia as the school’s athletic director until his retirement. During his 25 years as athletic director, he built one of the most successful programs in the nation, with his teams winning 25 SEC championships and 22 national championships.

His long list of accomplishments led to his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994. Dooley also has been named to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and the former Auburn University player and assistant coach is an Alabama Sports Hall of Fame inductee.

Dooley lives in Athens, Ga., with his wife, Barbara, in the same home they purchased in 1964 when they moved to Georgia.
