ART & GARDEN WORKSHOPS

Basket Weaving: Delightful Versatility

Saturday, September 10, 2016, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Violet Classroom, Callaway Discovery Center

Try your hand at a new technique for our Callaway Gardens basket making classes!  This basket features a 4” x 6” wood bottom and is finished with a square dip handle.  A wide assortment of natural materials will be provided for those who wish to embellish their baskets.  Great fun and very versatile!  Suitable for beginning basket makers.

Class limited to 6 participants

Blue Morpho Butterfly Reception

Saturday, September 17, 2016, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Day Butterfly Center

After a brief overview with our butterfly expert,  get up close and personal with the fantastically beautiful Blue Morpho Butterflies that are all over the Day Butterfly Center Tropical Conservatory.  These spectacular iridescent blue butterflies seem magical in this amazing habitat.  Stroll through the conservatory with a complimentary glass of red wine or red grape juice, and experience these beauties eyeball to eyeball.

Basket Weaving: Gathering Basket

Saturday, October 8, 2016, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Violet Classroom, Callaway Discovery Center

Discover the joy of weaving an heirloom Gathering Basket.  This sturdy basket is woven on a 10” square hoop and is the perfect size for taking to the local farmer’s market or gathering vegetables or flowers from a personal garden.  Instruction will include basic basket weaving techniques and would be appropriate for both beginner and intermediate basket weavers. Weave the basket then use creativity with natural materials to decorate and personalize.

All basketry materials will be supplied.

Attendees should bring heavy shears and an old bath towel.

Marvelous Monarchs

Monday, October 10, 2016, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Spend a fun, informative morning learning about these amazing creatures: their astounding life cycle, flight and details of their migratory journey.  Learn the perils these butterflies are facing in today’s world and how we can help.  Class includes a visit to the Day Butterfly Center outdoor garden for tips how to attract monarchs to your garden. Try catching and tagging monarchs and why this is important.  Leave with lots of information and a special plant for intended for monarch butterflies.

Basket Weaving: Linda’s Favorite Basket

Saturday, November 12, 2016, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fresh Greenery Christmas Workshop

Saturday, December 3, 2016, 10 a.m. to Noon

The wonderful scent of winter evergreens signals the holiday season and festivities are at hand.  To help get ready, we’ll provide the instruction, frames, mechanics, fresh greenery, berries, etc.  Participants go home with a delightful Christmas decoration to bring holiday cheer to any home.  Choose a wreath, centerpiece or door hanging.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP SERIES

Year-round opportunities to take great photos coupled with expert instruction from accomplished amateur photographer Jim Henderson make Callaway Gardens the perfect venue for learning digital photography. The majority of the classroom instruction takes place in the Callaway Discovery Center.

 

Henderson brings an encyclopedic knowledge of digital photography’s technical aspects, a mastery of the discipline’s artistic side, and an incredible knack for teaching and inspiring his participants in a fun and enthusiastic manner. He presents each topic in an easy-to-understand fashion.

Mastering Night Photography at the Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival

Friday, September 2 through Sunday, September 4

Mountain Creek Conference Center, Room 110

The photo opportunities are abundant at this event.  Participants begin in the classroom to discuss camera and exposure settings then shoot the balloon glow. Saturday morning includes balloon launch and classroom session. Then, participants will shoot balloon launches on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, followed by a final classroom session on Sunday morning. Tripods and cable releases required.

Fees: $175/Guest; $157.50/Annual Passholder

Mastering the Nightscape:

Fantasy in Lights

Monday, November 14, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Mountain Creek Conference Center, Room 110

Join us for a unique opportunity to visit Fantasy In Lights before it opens to the public and shoot the most spectacular holiday light and sound show in the South arranged in over a dozen themed displays! With our own private transportation, participants will have multiple opportunities to stop, set up our tripods, and get truly amazing shots not possible from a moving vehicle. The workshop begins in the classroom, where we cover camera and exposure settings and tips for getting great images.

Fee: $100/Guest; $92.50/Annual Passholder
