Basket Weaving: Gretchen’s Heart

The spirit of abiding love abounds within this clever heart shaped Valentine’s basket. Watch a square turn into a heart as you weave. Basket measures 9”x10”x2”. We will finish the project with an exciting technique – a rolled Gretchen border. Suitable for beginner and intermediate basket makers. Love what you make or make one for someone you love! Lunch is not included in the workshop, but participants may bring a lunch or pick up something from the Discovery Café. Limited to 6 participants

Become a Raptor Ranger

Interested is identifying local raptors? Join us for this interactive workshop where you will learn the key field identifiers to native raptors while they are in flight or on a perch. Meet some of our live raptors, including an owl, hawk, and falcon, up close and personal. Our trained raptor specialists will recommend the best places to identify local raptors, as well as migratory tracts these beautiful predators take every winter. Discover how birds of prey are beneficial to have on your property and learn ways to attract them. If you like both songbirds and raptors, learn how the two can co-exist to create a healthier habitat in your own backyard. Bird identification materials are provided; bring your own binoculars (limited supply available for loan during class).

Invite Birds into your Yard and Garden

Encourage your favorite feathered friends to your backyard! Learn how to attract year-round and migratory birds to your home landscape by using “homemade” bird feed, planting native plant species that provide cover and food. Tour Callaway Gardens’ Certified Backyard Habitat to learn how to identify common, local backyard birds. Materials are provided; bring your own binoculars.

Pine Needle Basketry

You’ll make a basket using pine needles and coil basketry techniques. This beginner class covers the basic skills needed to make the basket. Complete the class with a basket reflecting personal taste and design. Lunch is not included in the workshop, but participants may bring a lunch or pick up something from the Discovery Café. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP SERIES
Year-round opportunities to take great photos coupled with expert instruction from accomplished amateur photographer Jim Henderson make Callaway Gardens the perfect venue for learning digital photography. The majority of the classroom instruction takes place in the Callaway Discovery Center.
Henderson brings an encyclopedic knowledge of digital photography’s technical aspects, a mastery of the discipline’s artistic side, and an incredible knack for teaching and inspiring his participants in a fun and enthusiastic manner. He presents each topic in an easy-to-understand fashion.

This workshop provides the information and skills necessary to operate the camera without the automatic exposure mode. After learning the limitations of the automatic exposure mode, explore the fundamentals of photography: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure and depth of field. Participants will learn how aperture and shutter speed can be used for creative purposes as well as what aperture-priority exposure, shutter-priority exposure and manual exposure modes are. Then, practice putting these concepts to use in the field.

Foundations III: Mastering Focus and Exposure
Saturday, February 28, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Building on the concepts mastered in the Foundations II workshop, this course includes instruction in understanding autofocus and manual focus, achieving an accurate focus with stationary subjects and subjects in motion, understanding exposure, understanding exposure meters and metering modes, evaluating exposure, understanding histograms, using exposure compensation, using automatic exposure bracketing and using automatic exposure lock. These topics are covered in class and then students have an opportunity to practice in the field. The workshop concludes with a presentation and discussion of dynamic range and high dynamic range (HDR) photography.
