Historic Columbus is very excited to announce our 8th Annual Box City Summer Art Camp. Box City provides a hands-on experimental approach to community planning and design principles. It instills understanding of the development of communities and their present problems and successes. The curriculum allows students to make their own buildings (from cardboard boxes) and create their own communities.
This year, we have also included the advanced level – Box City II – once again. Designed for our older campers and those who have attended the original camp, Box City II will be the next step in designing and planning. Box City I and Box City II will be offered during both sessions.
There will be two - one week camps, June 6-9 and June 20-23. Box City is open to all children ages 6-13. Each camp has a maximum of 45 children. Mayor Teresa Tomlinson, Dorothy McDaniel with Trees Columbus, city planners, and architects Jack Jenkins and Bob Kidd are our special guests. They will share their knowledge of architectural design, what makes a community great, how to run a city, and so much more. By the end of the week the campers will have created their own city block and have a new appreciation for their community.
Historic Columbus also invites the media to attend the Box City awards presentation where one camper will receive the grand prize of the “key” to the city! The awards presentations and end of camp party will be held on Thursday, June 9th and Thursday, June 23rd at 2:00 pm at the Wynnton Arts Academy Gym.
These camps are not possible without the generosity of the Wynnton Arts Academy, NSCDA, the Kiwanis Club of Columbus, and The Ice Cream Girl. Their kindness enables Historic Columbus to provide a camp that not only brings out a child’s creativity, but also gives them an appreciation and awareness of “our town.”
