Superheroes of Rock Return to Springer Opera House

It’s a rock concert!

It’s a rock tribute!

It’s a rock ’n roll romp down memory lane!

It’s “Rock Legends” and instead of Superman, it’s a super band returning to the Springer to perform a unique rock and roll revue where the audience gets to pick the songs and the bands they want to hear from the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.

Two years ago, Billy McGuigan and his band performed “Yesterday and Today: The Ultimate Beatles Experience” at the State Theatre of Georgia and demonstrated their command of every Beatles songs. Prior to the show, the audience requested what songs they’d like to hear and the band was never stumped.

Last year, they demonstrated their ability to recreate the music of the major pioneers of rock and roll in “Rave On! The Buddy Holly Experience.”

This time the audience will be given “music personality tests” in the lobby before the show. From that survey, just before curtain time the band will compile a set list. The resulting songs could be from such artists as Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Elton John, Janis Joplin, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Tom Petty, U2, Bruce Springsteen … the list goes on. (And includes, of course, the Beatles.)

Although Billy and his brother Matthew, who plays bass with the band and is music director, live in Omaha, Neb., the shows in Columbus are a homecoming for them. The McGuigans learned to play rock and roll growing up on Fort Benning and at most performances there are people who knew them from middle school or who knew their father. This show is a tribute to their father William McGuigan who passed away young from leukemia but left them with a love of rock and roll but particularly for the Beatles.

“Rock Legends” runs in the Mainstage Theatre at the Springer at 7:30 Thursday-Saturday and next Thursday-Saturday (Oct. 23-25) and at 2:30 next Sunday (Oct. 26). Fans of the previous shows or those who’ve heard what they missed should note that it’s short two-week run for “Rock Legends.”
