Local Students Win at Carson McCullers Festival

Columbus, Ga., February 25, 2020 – Last week, local students performed original poetry at Carson McCullers Festival Invitational Poetry Slam and won cash prizes. After students performed in the poetry slam, they attended a reception and a reading by Joy Harjo, United States Poet Laureate. This was the inaugural poetry slam event for the Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Music.

The Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Music’s website states the mission of the center to be “dedicated to preserving the legacy of Carson McCullers; nurturing writers and musicians, educating young people; and fostering literary, musical, artistic, and intellectual culture…” The Fountain City Slam is a public charity created to support young creatives in the community by hosting weekly workshops, poetry slams and community service opportunities.

The next free community workshop offered by Fountain City Poetry Slam will be March 4, 2020. This workshop is for area youth (grades 6th- 12th) and there will be food provided to attendees. Workshop participants must RSVP, space is limited. Click here for more information and to RSVP.
