Pine Needle Basketry
Saturday, March 15, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Callaway Discovery Center, Lily Classroom
This beginner class covers the basic skills needed to make a pine needle basket. You’ll make a basket using pine needles and coil basketry techniques. Complete the class with a basket reflecting personal taste and design. Lunch is not included in the workshop, but participants may bring a lunch or pick up something from the Discovery Café. All supplies are included.

Basket Weaving: Classic Tote

Discover the joys of basket weaving and let your creativity soar! This functional basket (12” x 4”x 12”) has a Shaker tape strap. Instruction includes basic basket weaving, suitable for beginner and intermediate weavers. A selection of natural and dyed reeds in an assortment of widths will be available. All basketry materials will be supplied. Bring heavy shears and an old bath towel. Limited to 10 participants.

Azalea Workshop

Wildflower Workshop

Identification, culture and appreciation of the wildflowers of the Southeastern United States will be included in this fun and informative workshop. Class will include a guided walk on the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Trail. Bring a sack lunch. Dress for weather and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Herbaceous Plant Propagation

Greenhouses, Sibley Horticultural Center
You’ll learn the skills of the trade: sowing seeds and taking cuttings from the plants seen in the Callaway Gardens displays. Take a private, behind-the-scenes tour of the production greenhouses and then take home your plant treasures to make your Summer garden the envy of the neighborhood. Bring your own sack lunch.

Spring Watercolor Workshop

Paint on location in the Gardens from direct observation of nature. One day will focus on painting flowers from a close-up view, and the other will focus on flowers in a garden setting. Students may paint any subject that inspires them at the painting sites. Class includes demonstrations, instruction, critique and individual coaching. Bring a lunch or go to the Discovery Café. All levels of painters welcome.

Vegetable Gardening with an Expert

Flower Arranging from the Garden

Each participant will go home with their own mixed bouquet arrangement of garden flowers. Bring favorite clippers and gloves, if desired. All materials provided.

Learn about hanging baskets, best plants to use, best combinations and their care. After an informative session you’ll get down to the ‘how-to’ and take home a creation of your own! DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP SERIES
Year-round opportunities to take great photos coupled with expert instruction from accomplished amateur photographer Jim Henderson make Callaway Gardens the perfect venue for learning digital photography. The majority of the classroom instruction takes place in the Callaway Discovery Center.
Henderson brings an encyclopedic knowledge of digital photography’s technical aspects, a mastery of the discipline’s artistic side, and an incredible knack for teaching and inspiring his participants in a fun and enthusiastic manner. He presents each topic in an easy-to-understand fashion.

The Foundations in DSLR Photography Workshop Series frees the aspiring photographer from reliance on the automatic exposure mode. The creative photographer uses ISO, aperture and shutter speed like a painter uses paint and brushes. At the end of the series, participants will be able to use their camera’s advanced features and take their photography to a new level of creativity.
The Adventures in DSLR Photography Workshop Series is for intermediate and advanced level students who have mastered the fundamentals of photography and are ready to conquer specialty areas. Courses build on Foundations series.
Bring your digital camera, owner’s manual, charged batteries and storage media. Dress casually in layers for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
Foundations I: A Beginner’s Guide to DSLR Photography (What the Camera Manual Doesn’t Tell You)

For photographers new to DSLR photography, this workshop is perfect. Digital photography workflow, how a DSLR works, features and brands, buttons and controls, camera care, essential accessories, media cards, batteries, tripods, lenses, computers, monitors and post-processing software are included as well as artistic composition and RAW image file type.

Foundations II: Creative Photography Beyond the Auto Mode

This workshop provides the information and skills necessary to operate the camera without the automatic exposure mode. After learning the limitations of the automatic exposure mode, explore the fundamentals of photography: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure and depth of field. Participants will learn how aperture and shutter speed can be used for creative purposes as well as what aperture-priority exposure, shutter-priority exposure and manual exposure modes are. Then, practice putting these concepts to use in the field.

Foundations II: Skill Builder Photo Shoot with Instructor

Foundations III: Mastering Focus and Exposure
Saturday, Feb. 15, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Building on the concepts mastered in the Foundations II workshop, this course includes instruction in understanding autofocus and manual focus, achieving an accurate focus with stationary subjects and subjects in motion, understanding exposure, understanding exposure meters and metering modes, evaluating exposure, understanding histograms, using exposure compensation, using automatic exposure bracketing and using automatic exposure lock. These topics are covered in class and then students have an opportunity to practice in the field. The workshop concludes with a presentation and discussion of dynamic range and high dynamic range (HDR) photography.

Mastering Night Photography at the Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival

The photo opportunities are abundant at this event. Participants begin in the classroom to discuss camera and exposure settings then shoot the balloon glow. Saturday morning includes balloon launch and classroom session. Then, participants will shoot balloon launches on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, followed by a final classroom session on Sunday morning.

On Friday, Glasener will conduct a landscape design workshop.
