ART AND GARDENING WORKSHOPS
Basket Weaving – Gathering Basket
Saturday, Aug. 23, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Discover the joy of weaving an heirloom Gathering Basket! This sturdy basket is woven on a 10” square hoop and is the perfect size for gathering garden vegetables or flowers or taking along to the local farmers market. Instruction includes basic basket weaving techniques and is appropriate for beginner and intermediate basket weavers. After weaving, baskets will be decorated with natural materials! Bring heavy shears and an old bath towel. All basketry materials supplied. Limited to 12 participants.

Pine Needle Basketry
Saturday, Sept. 13, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Make a basket using pine needles and coil basketry techniques. This beginner class covers the basic skills needed to make the basket. Complete the class with a basket reflecting personal taste and design. Lunch is not included in the workshop, but participants may bring a lunch or pick up something from the Discovery Café. All supplies are included.

Fall and Winter Vegetables: Grow Your Own in Containers
Saturday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m. to Noon
Learn which vegetables are best in the cool Fall and Winter seasons and how to grow them. Emphasis will be on those that can be grown in containers for easy harvest and care. Participants will take home a couple of containers that to plant their favorites and perhaps some new ones to try. Choose from a variety of lettuces, Swiss chard, kohlrabi, beets, mustard greens and more. Join gardening guru David Chambers and Patricia Collins in this informal ‘hands-on’ class for a morning discussion of crops and cultural know-how. Then, plant containers to take home.

Whooooo’s in your Neighborhood?
Saturday, Oct. 4, 9 a.m. to Noon
Join us as we explore the amazing world of owls. Take a guided tour through the habitats of the Eastern Screech Owl, the Barred Owl, and the Great-horned Owl, and meet a living representative of each species. Learn how to make your backyard “owl-friendly,” as well as how to identify native owls by their calls. Participants will also have the opportunity to assist in the construction of an owl nest box, and one lucky attendee will be able to take the finished product home. Recommended for guests age 6 and older. Walking may be over uneven surfaces.

Marvelous Monarchs
Saturday, Oct. 11, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Spend a fun and informative morning learning about these amazing creatures: their astounding life cycle, mechanisms of flight and details of their yearly migratory journey. Learn the perils these butterflies are facing in today’s world. After classroom time, visit the Day Butterfly Center outdoor garden for more tips on attracting Monarchs and try catching and tagging these beautiful insects and learn why this is important. Guests will leave with a lot of information as well as a plant especially for these butterflies.

Make your own Garden Trough
Saturday, Oct. 18, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Thought troughs were only for watering horses in the field, think again. They are marvelous for growing all sorts of plants and add a wonderful decorative element to any garden. Herbs, cacti, ferns and bonsai all work well in troughs both indoors and outdoors.
Join Helen Phillips in this hands-on art and gardening adventure to make a trough garden to take home. Limit 15 people.

Fun and functional, discover many uses for the Antique Spool Basket! Appropriate for beginner and intermediate basket weavers, this market-style basket with an antique spool handle, measures 12” x 6” x 5”. Basketry materials in a variety of widths and colors will be provided. Learn or master basic basketry techniques while letting creativity soar! Bring heavy shears and an old bath towel. Digital Photography Workshop Series
Callaway Gardens is the perfect venue for learning digital photography from accomplished amateur photographer Jim Henderson. Henderson brings an encyclopedic knowledge of digital photography’s technical aspects, a mastery of the discipline’s artistic side, and an incredible knack for teaching and inspiring participants in a fun and enthusiastic manner. Foundations in DSLR Photography Workshop Series
This series frees the aspiring photographer from reliance on the automatic exposure mode to use ISO, aperture and shutter speed like a painter uses paint and brushes. At the conclusion of the series, you will have the knowledge and skill to use your camera’s advanced features and take your photography to a new level of creativity.
Adventures in DSLR Photography Workshop Series
This series is for intermediate and advanced students who have mastered the fundamentals and are ready to conquer specialty areas. Instruction builds on the Foundations series. Classroom time varies depending on the topic.

Foundations I: A Beginner’s Guide to DSLR Photography (What the Camera Manual Doesn’t Tell You)
Saturday, Aug. 16, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This workshop is designed for those new to DSLR photography. The topics include: digital photography workflow, how a DSLR works, features and brands, buttons and controls, camera care, essential accessories, media cards, batteries, tripods, lenses, computers, monitors and post-processing software. An introduction to artistic composition and a discussion of the RAW image file type included.

Foundations II: Creative Photography Beyond the Auto Mode
Saturday, Aug. 23, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This workshop provides the information and skills necessary to operate the camera without the automatic exposure mode. After learning the limitations of the automatic exposure mode, explore the fundamentals of photography: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure, and depth of field. Learn how aperture and shutter speed can be used for creative purposes, what aperture-priority exposure, shutter-priority exposure, and manual exposure modes are. Practice putting these concepts to use in the field.

Foundations II: Skill Builder Photo Shoot with Instructor
Sunday, Aug. 24, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This workshop continues with an optional photo shoot with the instructor. Get more practice in the field working with the concepts from the previous session, helping solidify the concepts.

Mastering Night Photography at the Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival
Friday-Sunday, Aug. 29-31
The photo opportunities are abundant at this event. Participants begin in the classroom to discuss camera and exposure settings then shoot the balloon glow. Saturday morning includes balloon launch and classroom session. Then, participants will shoot balloon launches on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, followed by a final classroom session on Sunday morning.
Fees: $140 Guest/$126 Annual Passholder; Includes digital handout.

Foundations III: Mastering Focus and Exposure
Saturday, Sept. 20, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Building on the concepts mastered in the Foundations II Workshop, this course includes instruction in understanding autofocus, understanding manual focus, achieving an accurate focus with stationary subjects and subjects in motion, understanding exposure, understanding exposure meters and metering modes, evaluating exposure, understanding histograms, using exposure compensation, using automatic exposure bracketing and using automatic exposure lock. We cover the topics in class and get an opportunity to practice what we learned in the field. The workshop concludes with a presentation and discussion of dynamic range and high dynamic range (HDR).

Foundations III: Skill Builder Photo Shoot with Instructor
Sunday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Foundations II Workshop continues with an optional photo shoot with the instructor. In this four-hour segment, participants get more practice in the field working with their newly learned concepts from the previous day’s session. The extra time in the field and additional coaching by the instructor help solidify the concepts.

Adventures in DSLR Photography: Mastering Close-up and Macro Photography: The Butterfly
Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 4 - 5
Saturday 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to Noon
This two-day intermediate-level workshop begins in the classroom to cover challenges in macro photography; managing limited depth of field; focusing techniques; equipment and gear; using flash; and artistic considerations. On Sunday morning there will be an exclusive opportunity to shoot with tripods at the Day Butterfly Center before it opens to the public! Following that, participants will focus on shooting native species. The workshop concludes with participants selecting and sharing their top five shots of the weekend for group critique. The instructor will select images to use in demonstrating post-processing using Lightroom and/or PhotoShop.

Mastering the Nightscape: Fantasy In Lights®
Nov. 17, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Join us for a unique opportunity to visit Fantasy In Lights before it opens to the public and shoot the most spectacular holiday light and sound show in the South and one of best in the world arranged in over a dozen themed displays! With our own private transportation, we will have multiple opportunities to stop, set up tripods, and get truly amazing shots not possible from a moving vehicle. The workshop begins in the classroom covering the camera, exposure settings and tips for getting great images.

Adobe Lightroom I: A Comprehensive Two-Day Introductory Course

This two-day workshop is a great introduction to Adobe’s newest software solution for digital photographers. Bring a laptop and work along with the instructor. Once participants begin using Lightroom, they’ll wonder how they ever managed without it. This workshop often sells out quickly, so register early to reserve a spot!
