Tour
A visit to Columbus is incomplete without a tour of the State Theatre of Georgia. The Springer Opera House is a National Historic Landmark, one of only seven U.S. theatres with that designation. When the Springer opened its doors in 1871 it played host to the greatest stars of the day. Through the years noteworthy performers such as Edwin Booth, Buffalo Bill, John Phillip Sousa, Ma Rainey, Ethel Barrymore, Burt Reynolds, and Hal Holbrook have made their mark on the Springer stage. Docent guided historic tours are available every Wednesday at 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM. Tickets are $10. Visit https://www.springeroperahouse.org/tours to reserve your spot. For an even more unique experience, late night Ghost Tours are frequently available. Tickets are limited and upcoming dates are posted on the Springer website.
Performances
The Springer Opera House produces fourteen shows each season with something for everyone. Emily Woodruff Hall houses the Mainstage series and the Dorothy McClure Theatre houses both the Children’s Series and the Studio II Series. The Mainstage season features well known Broadway titles while The Studio II series hosts new works or lesser known pieces. The Children’s Theatre series features familiar titles for the whole family. The Springer also produces a Theatre for the Very Young series which presents newly created shows catered to young children by incorporating hands-on interactive experiences that reinforce developmental learning ideas. These shows are perfect for the youngest audience members and are geared toward children ages 0-3. For more information about the schedule or ticket availability call 706-327-3688 or visit springeroperahouse.org.
