Warm Weather + Tons of Events = Fun Weekend!

It looks like it's all coming together for a great weekend…perfect weather and a calendar full of ideas for things to get out and do! Here's a quick peek at some of the things you might enjoy…

If it’s been a while since you’ve been to the Historic 1850s Village of Westville, this is a great weekend to go! They’re having their Spring Days Celebration and they’ll show you what life was like and what Spring brought to those folks way back in the day. They’ll have all sorts of living history demonstrations with things like plowing, planting, sheep shearing, wagon rides, quilting, open-fire cooking, candle dipping, soap making, and more. Kids will really enjoy this because they’ll get to try their hands at some of these activities…ok, maybe not the sheep-shearing! Go hungry because the Kiser Restaurant in Westville will have plenty of good food available! Everything is taking place Thursday-Saturday (May 6-8) from 10:00am-5:00pm and admission is $10 for Adults, $8 for Seniors, College Students, and Military, and $5 for K-12. Westville is located just outside of Lumpkin, GA, about 35 minutes south of Columbus on US 27. (888) 733.1850 www.westville.org

“Be Kind to Animals Week” is going on now thru Saturday and to celebrate, PAWS Humane is holding its first ever “Kind Kids Day” this Saturday beginning at 11:00am. It’s a big celebration with food and drinks, kid-friendly games and activities, a “What Being Kind to Animals Means to Me” Art Contest, and even something extra special for Mom! And this is kind of cool…the Columbus Postal Service will be there to unveil the new “Adopt a Shelter Pet” stamps! This is an amazing facility so make sure you take a peek inside and you might even find a 4-legged friend to take home with you!! PAWS Humane is located at 4900 Milgen Road. How about let’s get romantic Saturday night!? OK, get it out of the gutter because we’re talking about the Columbus Symphony Orchestra doing their thing, for the last time this season, with a performance called Romantic Russians. They’re welcoming a special guest on the piano, Tanya Bannister, who’ll be pounding out some of Tchaikovsky’s and Rachmaninoff’s most popular works. We are lucky to have such an amazing symphony right here in Columbus, so go enjoy! Could be a fun date-night…I'm just saying… The performance will be held in Bill Heard Theatre at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts and tickets are $36. (706) 323.5059 www.csoga.org

It’s a bird, it’s a plane…no, wait, it really is a bird! Saturday morning at 10:00am, there’s a raptor release event taking place at Oxbow Meadows (South Lumpkin Road). Look for an expert from the Southeaster Raptor Center who’ll present a short program with live birds, discuss the rehabilitation process and then actually release a raptor back into the wild. Free! And don't forget, the music continues Friday night (May 7) with the next in the series of concerts in Uptown Columbus. This one features the band "Theatrics" on stage from 7:00-10:00pm. Just bring your lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy some music under the stars. Free! (706) 596.0111. www.uptowncolumbusga.com

Remember, this is just the tip of the iceberg of all the things going on this weekend, so don't forget to explore the Community Calendar for details on more happenings.

Now, go have some fun…
