Theatre Lovers Go All Out in Columbus, GA!

In addition to everything else that Columbus has to offer, there is a burgeoning theater scene in Columbus that surprises visitors, but makes perfect sense to locals. If you know the history of Columbus, you know that the city was one of the major cultural centers of the South between New York and New Orleans in the period after the Civil War. That included the theater, with many big names stopping in to play shows over the years.

 

The Springer Opera House, built in 1871, and named the State Theater of Georgia by Governor Jimmy Carter, is the most historically significant of the theaters in Columbus, if not the Southeast. Come and gaze upon the stage that once hosted the likes of Edwin Booth (John Wilkes Booth’s brother), Oscar Wilde, Ethel Barrymore, and the bandleader John Philip Sousa – to name but just a few. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and was named a National Historic Landmark in 1978.
