Plan a Visit to the Columbus Museum Over the Holidays and Into the New Year!

Looking for something to do with kids and family over the Holiday season that combines learning, art, history, and amazing experiences? The Columbus Museum has all of that in interactive displays that demonstrates the art and history of the entire region in Smithsonian-like quality. It is more of a cultural center than it is just a museum.

The Columbus Museum was founded in 1953 on the estate of W.C. Bradley and after expansions in 1989, has grown into one of the largest museums in the Southeast. The museum is “unique for its dual concentration on American art and regional history, displayed in its permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, and educational programs.”

The Museum encompasses 89,000 square feet, “including an interactive children’s gallery, a 300-seat auditorium, and a large atrium for special events. Galleries showcase both permanent and temporary exhibitions on regional history and American art, while a multimedia theater offers a film exploring the history and culture of the Chattahoochee Valley.”

You’ll want to be sure to visit the Chattahoochee Legacy Gallery, “which traces the history of the Chattahoochee River Valley. The gallery includes archeological excavations and life-size dioramas of an ancient Native American dwelling, a turn-of-the-century schoolhouse, an urban slave cabin and a 20th century army tent from Fort Moore.” School-aged children and adults will learn things they never knew before about ways that the Creek Indians and early settlers and slaves influenced the history of the region.

And, of course, the Columbus Museum has art. “The American art collection includes paintings, sculpture and decorative arts from the Colonial period to the present. Special highlights of this tour will include artists like Charles Willson Peale, Albert Bierstadt, Lee Krasner, Stuart Davis and Louise Nevelson.” In addition, visit the new permanent collection installation, By the People, For the People: 300 Years of American Art from the Permanent Collection.

As you plan the days after Christmas and into the New Year, the Columbus Museum is a fascinating stop for the whole family!
