Well, the holidays are officially upon us so that means lots of family and friends dropping in over the next few weeks. Hmmm, a house full of company…what to do, what to do? Start the weekend off with a little fresh air and join in the Nature Walk at Oxbow Meadows. This free, guided nature walk, which starts at 8:00am this Saturday, will show you how to identify certain plants, birds and other wildlife along the trails around Oxbow Meadows (South Lumpkin Rd.) Just make sure you dress for the weather and wear some good walking shoes. The National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus has a really cool program going on this Friday and Saturday (November 26 & 27) called "Captured! Combat Tours of the USS Water Witch." Uniformed re-enactors and exciting narrative accounts will tell the story of the battle for the USS Water Witch. During a nighttime raid off the coast of Savannah, GA in the summer of 1864, Confederate sailors captured the blockading ship in a daring commando-style raid. The USS Water Witch has been recreated in full scale on the Museum grounds and this event will mark the second year of these on-deck tours, which will run at 11:00am, 1:00pm, and 3:00pm. Maybe you need a little music Saturday night. Then head to the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts (Broadway) for a performance called "An Evening with Joe Bonamassa." This award-winning blues rock star, guitar hero and singer-songwriter and his ace touring band will perform a one-night-only show is in support of his album Black Rock, which was released on Bonamassa's J&R Adventures label in March 2010 and debuted at #1 on Billboard's Blues Albums Chart and #38 on Billboard's Top 200 Chart, a huge leap from 2009's The Ballad of John Henry which debuted at #136 on the Top 200. The tenth full-length solo release and eighth studio album of his career, the disc marks Bonamassa's sixth collaboration with Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes, Aerosmith) as producer. A child prodigy, Bonamassa opened shows at age 12 for blues legend B.B. If you really need to get folks out for the day, load the car and head to Callaway Gardens…it's just up the road a bit in Pine Mountain, GA. Their Mum Season is going on until November 30 and it's your chance to explore the Gardens and enjoy an incredible variety of color, size and types of chrysanthemums. Rare Cascading Mums overflow their baskets up to four-and-one-half feet long! Mr. Cason's Vegetable Gardens displays are reminiscent of a patchwork quilt. Or, if you need a really out-of-this world activity at night, the you have to take in "Fantasy in Lights." See the magic of Christmas come alive in the eyes of loved ones as everyone enjoys the brilliance of EIGHT MILLION lights in one of the world's largest outdoor light and sound shows. Sing carols, drink warm cocoa and buy unique gifts to celebrate the holiday season. Not to worry if you can't make it this weekend because it'll be going on until December 30.
