Are you the type that thinks about what kind of superpower you could have if you could only have one? Would you be able to fly? Have super strength? Have laser beams shoot out of your eyes? Be able to control people’s minds? Time travel? Our family will, from time to time, sit around the table (especially after having seen the latest Marvel or DC movie) and will talk about what it would be like to actually BE a super hero. You ever use your imagination that way? Well, now, your imagination came come to life a bit more easily! Join us for the weekend of February 24-25 and go “All Out” for Super Hero Weekend 2018! Candlewood Suites is providing a great deal on weekend stay for the festivities and there will be events at various places all weekend for you to enjoy and BE a super hero! And, maybe you’ll be needed to fight some bad guys along the way! This will be a great weekend for kids and families to come together and have adventures all over town. From the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Superheroes and Villains Concert to the Masquerade Ball Pre-Party to the Columbus Comic and Toy Show, there will be things going on all weekend! What are you doing this Saturday? What are you doing this weekend? How often do you think about that early in the week when you don’t have other plans already nailed down? Columbus has a weekend vacation alternative for you during the Winter months that might be surprising. Come on a Friday night and take in a great dinner or a show at one of our local theaters. Do some shopping at our malls and retail stores, or do window shopping with a stroll down Broadway. Then, on Saturday morning, visit Market Days on Broadway, our year-round Saturday morning craft and farmer’s market. Encompassing several blocks, you will find all kinds of things to look at, buy, and bring home! Schedule a local historical and sightseeing tour. Visit one of our great museums. Take a walk along the Riverwalk and the Chattahoochee River. Enjoy a bike ride and some great outdoor fun! There is absolutely no reason to sit at home on a weekend in the Winter when Columbus is nearby and offers adventure, fun, beauty, access to the outdoor experiences and indoor learning, great food, markets and shopping, music, and so much more! This isn’t meant to be an advertisement. It is an invitation to a great weekend of experiences and enjoyment that is available in a concentrated and accessible area. The time between Thanksgiving and the New Year is spent with Holiday fun, food, family, and plenty of festivities! Did you know that Columbus has all of that available to enjoy? Every weekend of the season has great food, music, festivities, plays and shows, exhibits, and so much more! Let’s take a look at what just one upcoming holiday weekend has to offer! We kick off the Christmas season with the Broadway Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting on December 1st from 6:30-8:30 pm! There will be decorated Christmas trees lining Broadway and a lot more: Christmas lovers rejoice as Santa is escorted in by his entourage, including special guest appearances from Santa, the Coca-Cola Polar Bear, and Mayor Teresa Tomlinson Sing along to traditional Christmas carols at the lighting of the giant Christmas tree and play in the SNOW! There will be hot chocolate, candy canes and lots of fun for the entire family. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite holiday attire and to bring their camera to partake in the many photo opportunities! Over the weekend of December 1st - 3rd in Columbus, you can see the Broadway musical, Newsies, at the Springer Opera House or Fancy Nancy’s Splendiferous Christmas or attend the CSU Broadway Ball all on Friday night! Then, you can enjoy shopping at an outdoor holiday market on Saturday morning at Market Days on Broadway. After that, fill your afternoon with wonder at a Victorian Christmas Open House at the National Civil War Museum and a One Hour Sightseeing Tour of the local attractions. End the evening with a great meal at one of our fabulous Uptown restaurants! That is just one of our weekends over the holiday season! Of course, we have amazing places to shop and experience holiday fun, great restaurants to eat at, places to get treats, and it will all be decorated beautifully for Christmas! Christmastime is here in West Georgia and we have fun and experiences for the whole family available for you to enjoy! Spend the weekend in Columbus as we host the 5th Annual Food Truck Festival over Veteran’s Day Weekend! Don’t you love street food? Food trucks? Those amazing little set ups with amazing offerings outside where you can see and smell what’s cooking? Imagine a street fair full of outdoor mobile kitchens ready for you to walk by and take a taste! That’s what will be available for the 5th Annual Food Truck Festival in Columbus on November 11th from 11am - 5pm. Uptown Columbus & Atlanta Street Food Coalition will host the 5th Annual Food Truck Festival in Columbus, Georgia. Join us on November 11th from 11am - 5pm as Woodruff Park and Dillingham Bridge transform into a Food Truck Mecca. 25 GOURMET FOOD TRUCKS will set up in our backyard with DJ Dave Arwood playing jams all afternoon! The full list of trucks to come soon, as well as libations in our craft beer garden! Admission cost $5 per person; children 12 and younger are free. Please bring $5 CASH to the gate. Again, CASH ONLY. With dozens of restaurants represented, this will be one of the tastiest events of the year! Come enjoy the long Veteran’s Day weekend in Columbus and plan a visit to the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning as well as many of the other attractions in the area. Take in a show on Saturday evening at Springer Theater or enjoy the cool evening a walk along Broadway Uptown. October and November weekends in Columbus along the Chattahoochee are the best time of year to “go all out” and experience the beauty and glory of Fall in the South, with cooler days and nights, changing colors, and festivities every weekend! Fall in Columbus means you can combine the outdoor activities that summer provides, like whitewater rafting in the Chattahoochee, biking, hiking, and Uptown walks, with the outdoor festivals that are our speciality! Check out the festivals and special events over the next few weeks: Arts on the River, Saturday, October 21, 2017 At 11:00Am - 5:00pm “Arts on the River is in its 22nd year, a fine arts only show and sale with artists from throughout the south east. Located in the median of the 1100 block of Broadway, Columbus, GA, a $1200 Best in Show award is presented to the winning artist. A qualified judge from out of town determines the recipient of all awards. The show opens at 11 am and closes at 5 pm. Details on web site www.artsontheriver.com. Entertainment all day. This event is free to the public, no ticket required.” The National Infantry Museum’s new National Memorial to the Global War on Terrorism will be dedicated Monday, October 16, 2017, at 11 a.m. The memorial will be open to the public at the dedication and thereafter. “The memorial, now under construction, will include eight granite panels etched with the names of nearly 7,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who have died in service since 9/11. A 13-foot steel beam taken from the wreckage of the World Trade Center and donated to the museum by New York City firefighters will sit atop concrete columns representing the Twin Towers. The memorial also will feature nine bronze figures representing an Infantry squad, illustrations of each service’s role in protecting our nation, and narrative panels chronicling the nation’s longest war.” These are just a few of the new events and attractions opening in Columbus during the Fall. Are you ready for some football? Each October, Columbus hosts the Tuskegee-Moorehouse Football Classic, which is one of the great football rivalries in the South. We’ll be hosting events all week long (check out the calendar for the various events), all culminating with the big game on October 7. The "Grand Daddy" of all classics is proud of our 82 years of gridiron tradition. We promote the best play from our student athletes, as well as sportsmanship like conduct on and off the field. We are indeed proud of the 112 years of family relationships associated with the classic. The annual Tuskegee Morehouse classic is set for 2:00pm at A. J. McClung Memorial Stadium in beautiful Columbus, GA. This year marks the 82nd meeting between the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee and the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College. You will find over 100 local vendors selling anything and everything that you can image. The Market features many local and organic farmers selling produce, along with soap vendors, home goods, jewelry vendors and baked goods.” The 8th Annual Uptown Beer & Wine Festival. Saturday, September 30, 2017, from 1pm - 5pm. This is one of the more popular events on the calendar each year in Columbus. Over 100 craft beers from all over the country are made available along with over 25 wine selections. A DJ playing music, college football available to watch, and food provided by a host of Uptown restaurants. This is a great way to spend a Saturday in the Fall! Color Me Rad 5K in Uptown, Sunday, October 1, 2017, 9am - 12pm This is a 5K with a twist as it sends you through color stations leaving you coming out looking quite a bit different from when you started! This is fun for couples and the whole family as you run for fun! At the end, there will be music, food, and more! Come to Columbus this weekend! Or next! Or the next! Seen a good movie lately? Normally, a trip to the movies requires you to battle crowds, pay expensive ticket and concession prices, and spend an hour and a half to two hours watching a movie that you aren’t totally sure will be a good one. Of course, you love movies and stories and a night out and it seems like a good thing to do. But, have you been to a film festival before? With one short film after another made by aspiring directors, writers, and editors trying to tell a better story than you might see in Hollywood? Columbus invites you for a weekend of filmmaking at its best with the Way Down Film Festival at the Springer Opera House, October 13-14. The Way Down Film Festival will consist of over 40 short films and 10 events throughout the weekend. A description: Way Down Film Festival launched in 2016 as the first high-profile film festival in Columbus, GA. The inaugural WDFF showcased over 30 short films and celebrated the most innovative voices in narrative, animation, documentary, and experimental categories from all over the world. Curated into 6 different thematic genre blocks, each screening runs for 70-90 minutes and consists of varying short films. Viewed on a state-of-the-art projector and sound system, film screenings take place on The Main Stage of the gorgeous, historic Springer Opera House. Following each screening, there is a filmmaker Q&A. Select filmmakers and celebrity/industry judges are also in attendance. Peppered throughout the two-day festival are rocking, celebratory receptions and networking gatherings. Don’t miss this!
