What’s Up this Weekend in Columbus, GA?

What's up in Columbus, GA you ask? Plenty! There are lots of choices of fun things to get out and do, so here's a quick rundown of a couple of things going on this weekend. And you can find out more by going to the Community Calendar—it's a great resource to keep handy when planning for fun.

Columbus Symphony Orchestra has the answer to all your questions…well maybe not ALL your questions but at least the question of what to do this weekend. This Saturday evening, the CSO presents “A Riddle Wrapped Inside an Enigma” featuring pianist Alexander Kobrin. A beautiful selection of music will be performed, and if this is your first time at the symphony or maybe don’t know as much about the music selection as you’d like, you should get to the RiverCenter a little early. At 6:30, conductor George del Gobbo presents, “Know the Score,” an inside look and conversation into that evening’s performance.

The Columbus Cottonmouths have games both Saturday and Sunday this weekend at the Columbus Civic Center, and if you’re going don’t be surprised if the crowd is much noisier than usual. Because during the first intermission of both games, the Canine Races will take place! Fun! On Saturday night, it’s open to dachsunds only. Last year they had almost 70 little dachsunds racing across the ice. On Sunday, it’s open to other small breeds. Dogs must weigh less than 20 pounds, have tow human handlers and have proof of vaccinations and will be examined by a vet before the race. Dog parents can sign up online. All human handlers must have a game ticket but there’s no cost for the dog competition. Pet food, toys, treats, blankets and towels will be collected at each game to be donated to local shelters.

RiverMill Event Center is having an Italian Wine Dinner tonight. Dinner is $45 per person and the wine course sampler is $20 per person. If you are a food and wine enthusiast, this is for you. Starts at 6:30 pm. To reserve your dining experience, call 706.327.9300. Sounds like a delicious evening to me!

A group of Columbus State University students will perform “How I Became a Pirate” this weekend, a story based on the popular 2003 picture book by Melinda Long. It’s about a little boy named Jeremy that is building a sand castle on the beach when a real pirate ship appears. He’s invited to join them and he gets right on board where he learns how to talk and act like a pirate, including things like not brushing his teeth and bad manners. He’s having fun, but soon realizes there’s no one to tuck him into bed and take care of him. There are lots of great characters in the story and even though it’s geared towards kids, there’s plenty to keep adults amused as well, including references to the Beatles, Elvis, Gilbert & Sullivan and even Gilligan’s Island. Besides, I know plenty of adults that would still dream about being a pirate one day!  Admission is only $5-$10.

Oxbow Meadows has had a lot of cool events happening lately and this one is no exception! On Monday evening, they’ll hold a film screening and reception for GROW! This film takes a look at a new generation of sustainable farmers through the eyes of 20 passionate, idealistic and fiercely independent young growers, including Chris and Jenny Jackson of Jenny Jack Farm in Pine Mountain. The mingle and reception are at 5:45, the film starts at 6:15 and immediately after there will be a discussion with Jenny and Chris Jackson. The film, soda and snacks are free and beer and wine are $1. Green and sustainable are the new buzz words so this is the perfect opportunity to learn more.

The Coca-Cola Space Science Center is holding an astronomy night at Providence Canyon State Park this Saturday, January 21 at 6:30 pm. Telescopes are available or you can bring your own. Cost is only $5!

So there's a peek at just a few of the many things goin on this weekend…remember to take a look at the Community Calendar to find out more.

Now, go have some fun…
