Fall is in the Air!

It's finally feeling like Fall outside so let's get out and enjoy!  If you need some ideas of things to do with family and friends this weekend, maybe this quick list will help.  Don't forget to check out the Community Calendar  to find tons more event happening in and around Columbus, GA.

And it can't be Fall in the South without football and there's a big one going on in town this Saturday.  It's the 21st Annual Fountain City Classic and things actually kick things off on Friday (Nov. 5) with a golf tournament at the Follow Me Golf Course at 11 AM. But if golf’s not your thing, the Village Vendor fair opens at 5 PM at the Trade Center where vendors will have tons of stuff for sale from the latest fashions to Greek merchandise to accessories. On Saturday morning, the Fountain City Classic Parade will march through Uptown Columbus at 10 AM. The Fountain City Classic Village Tailgate Party starts at 10 AM in the Civic Center parking lot & finally it’s game time! At 2 PM, it’s time for “Classic” Football as the Albany State Golden Rams & the Fort Valley Wildcats battle it out on the football field at A.J. McCLung Stadium. There are many more activities happening all weekend, so check the website for the full schedule.

It’s that time again…it’s 26th running of the Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens. This is an event that locals look forward to all year and for good reason. You’re in a beautiful setting, watching amazing Thoroughbred racehorses, surrounded by good friends and good food, and usually with beautiful weather (Saturday looks perfect!).  But while the horse races are the main focus of course, there are plenty of other activities happening throughout the day such as the Jack Russell Terrier races, the Southern Views Hat Contest, a huge kids zone with pony rides, inflatables, rock climbing & more. Most people bring your typical tailgating food, but if you don’t want to go through the hassle, Country’s BBQ, Chick-fil-A, & other food vendors will be on hand. Steeplechase benefits the arts in our community, so you’ll not only have fun, but also support a great cause. Tickets start at $25 and the gates open at 10 AM.  Check out their website for complete details and directions.

Head a little south of Columbus for lots of 1850’s-style autumn celebrations going on at Westville!  Activities like cotton gin operating, sugar cane syrup being made, candle making, soap making, hay stacking, corn shelling, games from the past and LOTS of country cooking!  It's all going on this Thursday-Saturday.  Admission:  $8-$10.  Westville is located in Lumpkin, GA (about 45 minutes south of Columbus).  888.733.1850

If you’re anything like me, you’re already contemplating putting up Christmas decorations or maybe you’re one those good people that don’t skip decorating for Thanksgiving. Either way, on Sunday afternoon (2:00pm), Oxbow Meadows  is holding a class in the art of leaf and flower pressing. You’ll learn from an expert which are the best plants to gather and how to put them into an arrangement that will last. This is perfect opportunity to not only learn to create beautiful decorations for your home for any season but these homemade arrangements would make fantastic holiday gifts. Participants will make a pressing during class to take home and learn to make colorful displays. The class is limited to 20 people so call today to reserve your space.

People work so hard on carving pumpkins for Halloween that it seems a shame to just throw them in the trash. So why not have a little fun with them? This Saturday is Pumpkin Destruction Day at The Rock Ranch  (The Rock, GA…about an hour from Columbus). There will be a pumpkin cannon, pumpkin bowling, a pumpkin hammer smash and monster trucks crushing pumpkins. I’m just glad I don’t have to clean up all that ooey gooey pumpkin mess afterwards! You can also take monster truck rides throughout the day for an additional $5! This is all in addition to the normal activities at the Rock Ranch like train rides, a petting zoo, a corn maze, hay rides, paddle boats, live music and much more! The weather is going to be beautiful and the epitome of Fall and this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy it with your family!  Admission is $14.

And just in time to help with all the holiday baking you'll be doing this season, check out "Breakfast Baking, Cookies & Holiday Shortcuts" at the Friendship Cafe inside Albright's.  Come learn tasty and healthy recipes all made from whole wheat! Pancakes, Sausage Rolls, Cinnamon Rolls, Healthy Fruit Syrup & Cookies. Some of the recipes will be demonstrated and tasted in class.  (That's what I'm talking about!) The class starts at 10 AM and it's $10 per person. Call 706.507.2487 for more information.

Maybe that will get you started thinking about cool stuff you can do this weekend.  There's something for everyone out there so to find out more, visit the Community Calendar  to get all the scoop.

Now, go have some fun…
