DETAILS ANNOUNCED FOR 19th ANNUAL SKY HIGH HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL AT CALLAWAY GARDENS LABOR DAY WEEKEND

End Summer on a High Note with a BONUS Sunday Balloon Glow and Blue Butterflies

PINE MOUNTAIN, GA (08/29/2017) – Lamenting the end of another Summer?  Worry not … at Callaway Gardens®, things are looking up with the return of the Callaway Gardens® Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival for its 19th year.

Set for Labor Day Weekend***, this annual Balloon Festival has something for everyone, from majestic, colorful balloons to Callaway Gardens’ unique mix of natural beauty, to its endless helpings of multi-generational activities and events.  When it comes to family fun, Callaway Gardens is the place to be to end Summer on a high note.

Festivities kick off Friday night when guests flock to Robin Lake Beach for the Balloon Glow.  Upbeat live music by Spencer Daniels & The Rogue Tones sets the mood as balloons inflate. While the sun sets, the balloons’ individual colors glow against the gorgeous evening sky.

On both Saturday and Sunday mornings, guests can marvel at the beautiful colors of the balloons as they set up and offer tethered balloon rides** (weather permitting*).  As the morning progresses, Robin Lake Beach opens for swimming, miniature golf, balloon artists, disc dog demonstrations, and more activities for all ages.  For those guests pondering about hot air balloons, the 4 p.m. Meet & Greet on Saturday and Sunday will be a perfect time to get some answers and then stick around for the afternoon tethered rides.  Balloons are most active around sunrise and sunset as this is when winds are calmest.

To make the early arrival deal a little sweeter, the Exchange Club of Columbus will be serving an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast for $8 per person (while supplies last) under the Beach Pavilion on Saturday and Sunday morning.

On Saturday, don’t miss the popular Classic Car Show.  Nearly 300 cars are expected to roll through the gates and add more color to the already spectacular event.

The Callaway Discovery Center will be showing the Disney® balloon-theme movie, “Up,” on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

And, this is one last weekend for guests to enjoy Robin Lake Beach’s Aqua Island,**a floating water playground.

Sports fans have no fear.  The games will be on the big screens at The Beach Bar at Robin Lake.  Saturday night will include live music by the Kyle Wilson Band and inflation of the larger-than-life patriotic Eagle-shaped hot air balloon (weather permitting).

Added to the fun on Sunday will be additions of surprises such as an entertaining performance by a Caribbean Dance Troupe as well as some stilt walkers.  The Moody Band will take the stage on Sunday night followed by the grand finale Balloon Glow as the festival comes to a close.

Inside the Gardens, be sure to witness the flight of hundreds of blue butterflies as part of September’s special Blue Morpho Month. If the trend continues, for the month of September there will be more Blue Morphos on display in one place at Callaway Gardens’ Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center than any other place on the planet. There are also bicycle trails, Birds of Prey shows, floral displays, walking trails, and more.

To get the adrenaline really pumping, guests have options.  The newly repaved seven miles of the Discovery Bicycle Trail is a great way to spin around the Gardens and take in the sites between balloon tether times.  Bicycles are available for rent or guests can bring their own.  Or, fly through the trees at TreeTop Adventure**, a year-round attraction at Callaway Gardens featuring more than 30 obstacles and zip lines in the tree canopy.  Advanced reservations are suggested.

Want to be a part of the high-flying balloon action?  Sign up to be on a Balloon Crew for the weekend.  Crew members are assigned to assist pilots with their balloons throughout the weekend. For more information, contact Carson Bayer at 706-663-5043 or cbayer@callawaygardens.com.

Overnight accommodations, including the recently renovated rooms of The Lodge and Spa, are available at Callaway Gardens that include admission to Callaway Gardens and these wonderful weekend events.  With comfortable lodging options and a host of great events and activities to choose from, a getaway to Callaway Gardens over Labor Day weekend is a great way to close out the Summer.
