Fall Weekend Fun!

(Events, Arts, History) Permanent link

It's cooling off...ok, maybe a little, but still enough to make you want to get outside and play!  Here're a couple of ideas for you to do with your family and friends this weekend.

Have you heard about all the ghostly things happening at Port Columbus?  This is crazy!  The staff and visitors have had lots of encounters lately:  books flying off the shelves in the gift shop, footsteps on the hull of the CSS Jackson, voices throughout the Museum...enough spooky stuff to give you chill bumps and enough to get the staff to call in the Alabama Paranormal Research Team and those folks found ALL SORTS of strange and unusual things going on!  So here's your chance to walk through the Museum at night withthe staff and the research team and you'll also get to hear the sounds recorded by the team during this special ghost hunt and tour.  I've been in this Museum at night and it can be a chilling, creepy.  This is a great thing to do to get in the Halloween mood!  They're doing these tours on Thursdays in October (10.8, 10.22 & 10.29) at 7:00, 8:00 & 9:00pm.  Admission is only $10 and you need to make reservations for this one because space is limited...plus too many bodies may scare the spirits away!  The National Civil War Naval Museum is located at the corner of Victory Drive and Lumpkin Blvd--just look for the USS Waterwitch in the front yard...you can't miss it.  To get the rest of the scoop, give them a call at (706) 327.9798 or www.portcolumbus.org .

One of the oldest rivalries in college football is headed back to Columbus!  It ‘s the 74th Annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Football Classic this Saturday…it’s the Maroon Tigers against the Golden Tigers!  This is one of those games that’s more than just football…there have been activities going on all week and there’s even a legendary parade that kicks everything off Saturday morning that winds thru Uptown Columbus.  These teams have actually been battling it out since 1902, but the classic has been played here for 74 years and Tuskegee is leading the way so far with a record of 49-19-5.  The game takes place at AJ McClung Memorial Stadium and kickoff is at 2:00pm.  Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for students in advance or you can get them at the gate for $25 for adults and $18 for students.  For mre details, call (706) 322.5983 or www.tuskegee-morehouse.com .

If you love all thing science fiction, maybe shows like Star Trek, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica or Star Wars, then you’re going to love what’s happening at the Coca-Cola Space Science Center this Saturday!  It’s the Columbus Sci-Fi Convention & Toy Show that will have all sorts of cool stuff going on…comics, games, action figures, collectibles, video games, tournaments model rockets, and Sci-Fi movies.  The 501st Star Wars Legion and local Star Trek Club will be there…and you’re welcome to come in costume as your favorite fantasy character.  Sounds like a fun day!  The Space Science Center is located on Front Avenue and the festivities will be goin on from 10:00am-9:00pm.  Admission is $5 (ages 3 & under get in free).  They can tell you more at (706) 649.1477 or check out their website at www.ccssc.org .

How about some jazz?  The Columbus Jazz Society will have their monthly Concert & Jam Session this Sunday night at the Historic Liberty Theatre.  This month, they're welcoming a special guest, Tyrone Jackson who'll be doing an eclectic blend of classic and contemporary jazz.  Concessions will be available.  Admission is $7, but there's no charge for musicians who sit in with the band!  Call (706) 660.9295 or visit www.columbusjazzsociety.com  for more info.

And now for something that kids will really enjoy!  It’s Playhouse Disney Live! at the Columbus Civic Center this Sunday.  Looks like all the Playhouse Disney pals are starring in the show! So the deal is, we're all invited to the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse as Mickey plans a spectacular music party for all his friends. The Little Einsteins will be there along with Winnie the Pooh, Tigger and Darby who are searching for music in the Hundred Acre Wood, and Handy Manny and his team of tools find the perfect party beat. It’ll be a great afternoon for your kids to laugh, sing and play along with all favorite Playhouse Disney pals are live on stage, and we get to be at the party!  It's this Sunday, October 11 and show are at 1:00 and 4:00pm.  Tickets are $14, $18, $30, and $40.  Need more details?  (706) 653.4482 or www.columbusciviccenter.org .

So last Friday night kicked off the Fall Concert Series in Uptown…and it started off with a bang…and this Friday night promises to be a big hit!  There’s been so much buzz about the band performing…they’re called DNR (Do Not Resuscitate!) and it is a band of 9 or 10 doctors from around town who get on stage and jam like there’s no tomorrow!  I’ve heard nothing but good things about what a great party band they are.  So don’t forget your lawn chair and bring a picnic or snacks and make it a night under the stars with your family & friends to enjoy some really good music from 7:00-10:00pm.  It's FREE!  (706) 596.0111
